Obverse description Central field occupied by the Carolingian royal monogram of Charles III, composed of interlaced letters within a beaded inner circle. The monogram, characteristic of the Carolingian diplomatic tradition, is boldly rendered in high relief against a flat field. A circular legend surrounds the beaded border, reading from a cross pattée. The overall composition is typical of late ninth-century West Frankish hammered coinage, with an irregular flan reflecting hand-struck production.
