Reverse description The central field displays the elaborate Carolingian royal monogram of Charles (Karolus), composed of interlaced letters within a beaded inner circle, a design characteristic of the Toulouse mint issues of Charles II. Small cross pattée stops punctuate the surrounding legend in the annular field. The monogram is rendered in the interlaced style typical of Carolingian palatine workshops, with clearly defined strokes despite the limitations of the hammered technique. The flan is irregular in outline, consistent with hand-cut silver blanks of the mid-ninth century.
