Obverse description A plain cross occupies the central field, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The cross arms extend to the inner circle, rendered in a bold, archaic Carolingian style typical of hammered small silver. A circular Latin legend reading CARLVS REX F surrounds the beaded circle, introduced by a cross pattée. The flan is irregular and slightly cupped, consistent with hand-struck ninth-century coinage.
