| Obverse description | Central field occupied by a Carolingian monogram composed of the interlaced letters of KAROLUS, rendered in the characteristic angular style of the period, set within a plain inner circle. The monogram is boldly struck but somewhat irregular, reflecting the hand-hammered technique. Surrounding the inner circle is a beaded border, beyond which the Latin legend GRATIA DI RE (Gratia Dei Rex, by the grace of God King) is distributed around the periphery in crude but legible capital letters. The overall composition is typical of the Carolingian royal coinage reform tradition, emphasizing royal authority through the royal monogram. |
