| Obverse description | Carolingian royal monogram of Charles II (the Bald) occupying the central field, composed of interlaced letters in the characteristic Carolingian style. The monogram is enclosed within a beaded inner circle, around which the Latin legend runs between the beaded circle and the coin's irregular edge. The die-work is typical of ninth-century Carolingian hammered coinage, with boldly rendered letterforms showing the angular, somewhat crude character of the period. |

| Reverse description | A plain Latin cross with equal arms occupies the central field, set within a beaded inner circle. The cross divides the inner field into four quarters. The Latin legend, reading the dedication to Saint Dionysius (Saint-Denis), runs continuously around the outside of the beaded circle toward the irregular flan edge. The lettering is angular and characteristic of Carolingian hammered silver coinage of the mid-ninth century, with notable variation in letter spacing and form across the known die varieties. |
