Reverse description A plain Latin cross with splayed terminals occupies the centre of the field, set within a beaded inner circle. The cross arms extend nearly to the inner circle, a standard Carolingian reverse design. The surrounding circular legend ✠ CONPEDIO PΛLCI identifies the Compiègne palace mint, reading between the inner beaded circle and the irregular outer edge of the flan. The overall style and execution are consistent with post-864 reform issues of Charles II (the Bald) struck at the royal palace workshop at Compiègne.
