Obverse description Carolingian royal monogram occupying the central field, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The monogram, composed of interlaced letters forming the name KARLVS, is rendered in bold relief in the characteristic Carolingian palatine style. A circular Latin legend surrounds the beaded border, reading GRATIA D-I REX, attributing royal authority by divine grace. The flan is irregular in shape, as is typical of ninth- and tenth-century Carolingian hammered coinage.
