Obverse description Central field features an elaborate interlaced monogram composed of the letters of the royal name CARLVS, rendered in the Carolingian caroline style with intricate knotwork interlacing. The monogram is contained within a beaded inner circle. A circular Latin legend surrounds the central device, reading GRATIA D-I REX, invoking the king's divine mandate. The die-work is characteristic of ninth- to tenth-century Carolingian hammered coinage, with irregular flan shaping typical of the period.
