Obverse description Central cross pattée within a beaded inner circle, its four arms of equal length extending nearly to the inner border. The surrounding field bears the royal legend in Carolingian capitals, disposed around the periphery between the inner beaded circle and an outer beaded rim. The flan is irregular, as typical of ninth-century hammered Carolingian small silver, and the die-work is bold and deeply struck in the central device.
