| Obverse description | Central field dominated by a bold cross pattée with a pellet in each of the four angles formed by the arms, enclosed within a plain inner circle. The surrounding legend reads ✠ CΛRLVS REX (King Charles), rendered in Carolingian majuscules. The flan is irregular and slightly ragged at the edges, characteristic of ninth-century hammered coinage. The relief is moderately high, with the cross design showing strong die definition despite the crude striking technique. |
