Additional information

Boso of Vienne declared himself king in October 879 at Mantaille, the first non-Carolingian to seize a rex title in the Frankish world since the dynasty's consolidation — a move that forced the divided Carolingian heirs into a rare moment of coordinated military response. His kingdom collapsed under that pressure by 882, though he held Vienne itself until his death in 887. Coinage from this reign survives in tiny numbers, minted across a window of chronic siege and territorial contraction.
