Amadeus VIII came to power in 1391 as Count of Savoy at the age of eight, with regents managing affairs until he assumed full control. His reign saw Savoy elevated to a duchy in 1416 by Holy Roman Emperor Sigismund — a diplomatic achievement that effectively ended the period this coin represents. The billon coinage of his county years circulated across a territory straddling the Alps, serving trade routes between France and the Italian peninsula at a moment when Savoy's political leverage was quietly but deliberately expanding.
