Additional information

Pheneos was an Arcadian city in the northeastern Peloponnese, geographically isolated by mountain terrain and politically marginal enough that its coinage is sparse across all periods. The years bracketing this obol correspond with the broader Arcadian federal experiment following the Battle of Leuctra in 371 BC, when Theban dominance reshuffled regional power and briefly elevated smaller Arcadian communities into greater autonomy. Whether Pheneos struck under its own authority or in loose alignment with the Arcadian League remains debated among specialists.

The BCD Peloponnesos reference ties this piece to one of the most rigorously documented auction collections for the region.
