| Obverse description | Facing left, the head of a wolf rendered in bold relief, its open jaws and alert ears rendered with vigorous archaic naturalism characteristic of Argive coinage. A retrograde sigma (Σ) appears in the upper left field above the wolf's head. The wolf, sacred emblem of Apollo Lykeios and civic symbol of Argos, dominates the entire flan. The style reflects the local Peloponnesian engraving tradition of the late Classical period. |
