| Obverse description | Diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust of Valentinian II facing right, shown from the shoulders upward in the late Roman imperial style characteristic of the Theodosian period. The emperor wears a pearl diadem and a paludamentum fastened at the shoulder, with visible scale or plate armour beneath. The circumferential Latin legend reads D N VALENTINI-ANVS P F AVG, identifying him as Our Lord Valentinian II, Pious and Fortunate Augustus. A beaded border frames the design. The effigy reflects the formulaic portraiture common to small bronze nummi of the late fourth century. |
