Obverse description Diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust of Valentinian II facing right, shown from the shoulders upward in the late Roman imperial style characteristic of the Theodosian period. The emperor wears a pearl diadem and a paludamentum fastened at the shoulder, with visible scale or plate armour beneath. The circumferential Latin legend reads D N VALENTINI-ANVS P F AVG, identifying him as Our Lord Valentinian II, Pious and Fortunate Augustus. A beaded border frames the design. The effigy reflects the formulaic portraiture common to small bronze nummi of the late fourth century.
