Reverse description The emperor advances to the right in military attire, grasping a kneeling barbarian captive by the hair with his right hand while his left hand bears an upright labarum (Chi-Rho standard). The composition conveys Roman imperial dominance over defeated enemies. The reverse legend GLORIA ROMANORVM is divided across the field, and the exergue bears the mint mark of the Treveri officina. The design type is characteristic of the joint reign of Valentinian I and Valens, widely struck across western mints from 364 onward.

Additional information

Valentinian I came to power in February 364 through military election at Nicaea, immediately splitting the empire with his brother Valens — a division that would prove permanent. The Treveri mint (modern Trier) was one of the western empire's most productive at this moment, supplying bronze coinage to Rhine frontier garrisons under constant pressure from Alamannic incursions. Valentinian himself led campaigns against the Alamanni throughout the 360s, making this issue functionally military pay as much as anything else.

RIC IX 5A distinguishes officina variants across the iiia and iiib subgroups by reverse exergue marks.
