Obverse description Right-facing bust of Emperor Valentinian I, depicted pearl-diademed, draped, and cuirassed, rendered in the robust late Roman military portrait style characteristic of the Valentinianic period. The pearl diadem is clearly articulated across the brow, with the bust shown in strong relief against the flat field. The cuirass and paludamentum (military cloak) are rendered with conventional drapery folds over the left shoulder. The encircling Latin legend reads D N VALENTINIANVS P F AVG, identifying the emperor as dominus noster with the epithets Pius Felix Augustus.
