Obverse description Diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust of Emperor Valens facing right, wearing a pearl diadem and imperial paludamentum over armour. The effigy is rendered in the late Roman style typical of the Valentinianic period, with the emperor’s features characterised by a strong jawline and close-cropped hair. The circumferential Latin legend DN VALEN-S P F AVG runs clockwise around the bust, divided by the portrait. A plain inner border frames the design.
