Obverse description Right-facing bust of Emperor Valens rendered in high relief, pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed, with finely engraved layered hair and a string of pearls forming the diadem. The paludamentum is fastened at the right shoulder and the cuirass is detailed with decorative pteryges visible at the lower truncation. The obverse legend encircles the effigy, reading D N VALENS P F AVG, identifying the emperor as pious and fortunate Augustus. The portrait displays the characteristic late Roman imperial style with a strong, idealized profile and prominent brow.
