| Additional information |
Severus II held the rank of Caesar under the Tetrarchic system when this coin was struck at Carthage in 306 — the same year Constantius I died at Eboracum and the entire western succession fractured almost immediately. The Carthage mint was among the more productive African issues of the late Tetrarchy, and its output for Severus II is notably brief; he was elevated to Augustus later that year, then captured by Maximian in 307 and executed in early 307 or 308 depending on the source. His coinage across all mints is consequently compressed into a narrow window.
