Obverse description Right-facing bust of Emperor Leo I, rendered in late antique style, adorned with a pearl diadem, draped paludamentum over cuirass, with visible shoulder-fastening. The imperial effigy is rendered in low relief characteristic of fifth-century Eastern Roman bronze coinage. A circular Latin legend surrounds the portrait in the field, reading D N LEO PERPET AVG, affirming his perpetual Augustan authority.

Reverse description Full-length frontal figure of Emperor Leo I, draped and cuirassed, turning slightly to the right, holding a military standard (labarum) in his right hand and an orb (globus) in his left, symbolising universal dominion. The emperor is depicted treading upon a prostrate captive beneath his feet, a common iconographic motif of imperial victory. The reverse legend SALVS REIPVBLICAE encircles the composition, proclaiming the health and welfare of the Roman state. A mintmark appears in the exergue referencing the Constantinople mint.
