Constantine II's reign lasted barely three years before he was killed in an ambush near Aquileia in 340, likely walking into a trap set by his younger brother Constans. The GLORIA EXERCITVS type was already a workhorse issue well before his death — introduced under Constantine I and struck in enormous quantities across virtually every mint in the empire. The Cyzicus mint, operating on the Propontis, was among the most productive eastern facilities of the period.
The "var." designation against RIC VIII 20 typically signals a die combination or officina letter outside the strictly catalogued sequence — Cyzicus ran multiple officinae simultaneously, and minor variants surface regularly.
