Additional information

Issued from the London mint during Constantine's early years as a junior ruler under the Tetrarchic system, this coin predates his consolidation of power by over a decade. The PRINCIPI IVVENTVTIS title — "Prince of Youth" — was a traditional honorific for heirs and junior emperors, carrying deliberate echoes of Julio-Claudian dynastic propaganda. Constantine held it briefly before circumstances, starting with his father Constantius I's death at York in 306, accelerated his rise far beyond what the Tetrarchy had planned for him.

The PLN mintmark places production at Londinium's primary officina during a period when the British mint was unusually active, supporting the usurper Maxentius's rival claims complicated the western minting network considerably.
