| Reverse description | Taras, the mythological founder of Tarentum, seated nude upon a dolphin leaping to the left, his body rendered with naturalistic musculature in the late Classical style. He extends his right arm forward holding a kantharos or wreath, while his left arm reaches back grasping what appears to be a trident or branch. A small figure or marine creature appears in the lower left field, and a secondary symbol is visible to the upper right. The ethnic legend ΤΑΡΑΣ is inscribed in Greek characters along the lower exergual area, identifying the issuing city. |
