Reverse description A tall, finely detailed ear of barley occupies the center of the reverse, its grains rendered with crisp, incuse relief radiating symmetrically from a prominent central spine; two curved leaves extend from the base of the stalk, one to each side. The ethnic legend ΜΕΤΑ is inscribed downward along the lower left field in Greek characters. The barley ear, emblematic of Metapontion's agricultural prosperity and its association with Demeter, is the city's principal and enduring reverse type throughout its silver coinage.
