Obverse description Phalanthos, the mythical Spartan founder of Taras, depicted nude and riding a dolphin to left or right; the figure occasionally holds an octopus. A scallop shell appears in the lower field on certain specimens. The composition is rendered in an archaic Greek style with bold, high-relief modeling. Reverse description A hippocamp (sea-horse) depicted striding to left or right, its equine forebody with raised foreleg transitioning into a scaled, serpentine fish tail with elaborately rendered fins.
