| Reverse description | Taras, the eponymous founder of Tarentum and son of Poseidon, depicted nude and seated on a dolphin leaping to the left, his body turned in a dynamic three-quarter pose; he extends his right arm forward and grasps the dolphin with his left hand. Two eight-pointed stars flank the central figure in the field, one to the left and one to the right, serving as control symbols. The ethnic inscription ΤΑΡΑΣ appears vertically along the left field, while the magistrate's abbreviation ΑΡΙ is inscribed in the lower exergual area. The reverse type reflects Tarentum's enduring civic iconography and its mythological connection to Taras and the sea. |
