| Obverse description | The mythological hero Phalanthos, the legendary oikist of Taras, depicted riding a dolphin to the left. He extends both arms outward in a balancing gesture, his figure rendered in a vigorous early Classical style. Below the dolphin, a scallop shell occupies the lower field. The ethnic inscription ΤΑΡΑϞ appears in the field, referencing the city of Taras. The composition reflects the foundational myth of the city's origins as related by Pausanias. |

| Reverse description | A hippocamp — a mythological sea-horse with the foreparts of a horse and the scaled tail of a fish — depicted in vigorous motion to the left, its forelegs raised. The creature is finely engraved with careful attention to musculature and scale detail on the fish-tail portion. The type is set within a shallow, lightly defined circular incuse square, characteristic of the early archaic coinage of Tarentum. No legend appears on the reverse. The overall style is consistent with the early period of Tarentine coinage production. |
