| Obverse description | Laureate head of Zeus facing right, rendered with fine detail in the high Classical style; the deity is depicted with a full, elaborately curled beard and flowing hair swept back from the forehead, partially enveloped in a wreath of olive or laurel. The portrait fills the flan with commanding presence, demonstrating the accomplished die-cutting characteristic of Metapontine coinage of the mid-4th century BC. The legend EΛEYΘEPIOΣ (Eleutherios, an epithet of Zeus) is associated with this type, referencing the liberating aspect of the god. |
