Reverse description The oecist — likely Phalanthos, legendary founder of Tarentum — depicted nude, seated to the left on a throne or klismos, holding a distaff in his extended left hand and a long scepter in his right. A small figure of a horse or foal appears before him in the lower field, consistent with early Tarentine reverse types. The composition is rendered in high relief in the incuse square typical of early South Italian Greek coinage, exhibiting vigorous, well-articulated musculature in the early Classical style.
