Obverse description Nude warrior on horseback galloping to right, thrusting a spear held in his right hand while his left arm bears a shield and grasps two additional spears. The magistrate's initials ΘΕ appear in the upper left field, while the name ΑΛΕΞ is inscribed in the lower field, identifying the controlling magistrate. The vigorous equestrian composition reflects the martial civic pride characteristic of Tarentine coinage of the early third century BC.
