| Reverse description | A large, finely rendered barley ear occupies the centre of the field in high relief, its grain-head and lateral spikelet rendered with naturalistic precision, a leaf curving to the lower left — the civic emblem of Metapontion emblematic of the city's agricultural prosperity. To the right of the stalk, the abbreviated ethnic legend MET is inscribed in Greek characters reading downward. The incuse treatment of the flan's reverse surface reflects the earlier Achaean incuse tradition, here fully evolved into a raised relief design on a broad, flat field. |
