Reverse description Taras, the mythological founder and eponymous hero of Tarentum, depicted as a youthful nude figure seated astride a dolphin leaping to the left, his body turned in a three-quarter pose with outstretched arm holding a bunch of grapes. He wears a Phrygian helmet and his posture conveys graceful movement across the sea. The legend ΤΑΡΑΣ is inscribed in the lower field, identifying the figure, with the magistrate's monogram ΑΝ appearing in the upper right field. The dolphin, a recurring motif on Tarentine nomoi, alludes to the legend of Taras being saved by a dolphin sent by Poseidon.
