Tarentum's silver nomoi of this period fall within a stretch when the city was increasingly dependent on hired mercenary commanders — Archidamus III of Sparta arrived to lead Tarentine forces against the Lucanians and Messapians around 342 BC, dying in battle at Manduria in 338 BC. The mint's output during these decades was substantial, funding both military operations and the city's ambitions as the dominant Greek polis in the heel of Italy.
Vlasto 399–406 represents a tightly clustered die group; collectors working this series will find meaningful variation across the sequence despite shared iconographic conventions.
