| Reverse description | The city founder Phalanthos, depicted nude, rides a dolphin to the left in the characteristic Tarentine iconographic tradition. He holds a grain ear in his extended right hand and cradles an ornate trident in the crook of his left arm. A magistrate's monogram appears in the right field. The ethnic legend TAPAΣ is inscribed in the exergue below, identifying the issuing city. The dolphin-rider type is among the most enduring and emblematic designs of Tarentine coinage. |
