| Obverse description | Draped bust of Demeter facing right, rendered in fine high relief characteristic of South Italian die-cutting of the early fourth century BC. The goddess is depicted with elaborately rendered wavy hair, swept back and secured with a wreath or stephane, with individual locks finely incised in the style associated with the Metapontine school. The facial features are idealized, with a straight nose, slightly parted lips, and a serene expression typical of Classical Greek portraiture. The flan is irregular, as is characteristic of hammered coinage of this period. |
