Obverse description Nude warrior on horseback galloping to the right, wearing a crested helmet and cuirass, holding the reins with both hands as the horse rears dramatically. A small figure or trophy appears in the left field, with the magistrate's name abbreviation ΕΠΙ to the left. The legend ΚΑΛΛΙΚΡΑΤΗΣ is inscribed in two lines beneath the horse, identifying the magistrate Kallikrates responsible for the issue. The composition is rendered in the vigorous, high-relief style characteristic of late Tarentine coinage.

Additional information

By the late 240s BC, Tarentum was a spent force. The city had exhausted itself funding Pyrrhus of Epirus's Italian campaigns — a costly gamble that ended in 275 BC at Beneventum — and then submitted to Rome in 272 BC under a treaty that stripped it of its fleet and garrison rights. These later nomoi were struck by a city navigating the humiliating realities of Roman clientage, its silver coinage continuing largely by commercial inertia rather than political ambition.

Vlasto 963 falls within a well-documented magistrate sequence, though the specific officials responsible for this emission remain incompletely identified in the literature.
