Obverse description Left-facing laureate bust of Napoleon III in high relief, with characteristic moustache and imperial beard. The legend NAPOLEON III EMPEREUR is inscribed in the field to either side of the effigy, and the engraver's signature CHAPLAIN appears in the lower exergue.

Reverse description Allegorical scene depicting three female figures in high relief: a central draped figure wearing a laurel wreath joins hands with the personification of the Red Sea on the left, shown in exotic attire with a sceptre and palm trees, and the personification of the Mediterranean Sea on the right, partially draped and holding a caduceus with a ship visible in the background. The legend JONCTION DES DEUX MERS arches across the upper field, the engraver's signature DEPAULIS F. appears to the right, and the inscription CANAL DE SUEZ / 1864 is contained within a rectangular panel in the lower exergue.
