Additional information

Innocent XI — Benedetto Odescalchi — was elected in 1676 after a conclave that lasted nearly two months, and his pontificate proved equally contentious. He clashed repeatedly with Louis XIV over Gallicanism and the right of asylum, and he financed the Holy League's campaign that culminated in the relief of Vienna in 1683. Bologna's mint operated under papal oversight but retained considerable local administrative autonomy throughout his reign, issuing small billon denominations like this muraiola to service everyday commerce in a city that remained economically active despite chronic currency debasement across northern Italy.
