Obverse description The central field depicts two prehistoric figures in a cave setting: a standing Cro-Magnon man holding a spear and gesturing, with a second figure seated beside tools or bones on the ground. The legend THONAC-DORDOGNE arcs across the upper periphery and LE THOT appears along the lower border, separated by small circular ornaments on either side.

Reverse description The reverse features a central hexagonal cartouche with a rope-style border enclosing a depiction of the Monnaie de Paris building in relief, flanked above and below by six five-pointed stars each and bearing the date 2009 on left and right sides and the legend MONNAIE DE PARIS below the building. The word FRANCE appears at the top and bottom edges of the hexagon, with EVM at the base. Surrounding the cartouche, the name of France is rendered in eight languages in the peripheral legend.
