Obverse description The central device depicts the reliquary shrine of the Veil of the Virgin (Voile de la Vierge) housed in Chartres Cathedral, shown in fine relief with two kneeling angels flanking the ornate Gothic reliquary case. The upper legend reads VOILE DE LA VIERGE and the lower legend reads CHARTRES, separated by decorative dot-and-circle borders on each side.
