Obverse description Central field occupied by a heart-shaped heraldic shield bearing horizontal stripes, surmounted by an imperial crown. The crudely struck legend surrounding the shield reads CARLO IMPERATOR, identifying the issuer as Emperor Charles V. The design is typical of the rough hammered coinage produced at the Alghero mint in the early sixteenth century, with the shield and crown rendered in low relief on an irregular flan.
