Reverse description The reverse field bears four lines of Greek inscription arranged horizontally across the coin, invoking the Theotokos in supplication on behalf of the emperor Constantine Doukas. The text reads: + ΘKЄR / ΘKΩΝ / ΔЄCΠΟ / ΤΗ, a formulaic invocation meaning 'Mother of God, aid thy servant Constantine, Despot.' The lettering is executed in bold, upright Byzantine majuscules characteristic of the mid-eleventh century. A horizontal line separates the first line of text from the remainder. A second piercing hole is visible at the bottom of the flan.
