Reverse description The Emperor Anastasius I depicted in full military dress, standing facing, with head turned slightly to one side. He holds a long spear or hasta in his right hand and rests his left hand upon a large round shield set at his side. The figure is rendered in the formal, hieratic style typical of early Byzantine silver coinage, conveying imperial authority and martial virtue. The mint mark appears in the exergue, with additional control marks in the field.
