Obverse description Draped and armored bust of Duke Francesco I d'Este facing right, wearing a gorget and lace collar, with flowing hair rendered in fine detail within a beaded inner circle. The ducal title legend surrounds the effigy in the outer field, reading FRAN MVT REG E C DVX VIII. The date 1631 appears in the lower exergual area beneath the bust, flanked by stops.

Reverse description A fully rigged galley sailing to the right amid stylized waves, its mast prominently centered and fitted with a torch or beacon, with billowing sails and detailed hull ornamentation including circular port-holes along the waterline. Stars are scattered in the field above the vessel. The motto legend NON ALIO SIDERE surrounds the composition within a beaded inner circle, conveying the device of navigating under no other star — an allusion to dynastic constancy.
