Bills of exchange (menice) circulated in Yugoslavia during the hyperinflationary spiral of 1993–94, one of the most severe episodes of monetary collapse in twentieth-century Europe. The National Bank issued these instruments as a parallel emergency mechanism when conventional note production could not keep pace with denomination requirements — the monthly inflation rate peaked at over 300,000,000% in January 1994.
The 50,000–100,000 range straddled a redenomination boundary, which is why some examples carry dual face values — a printing expediency rather than an error.
