Obverse description Central field dominated by a large Gothic letter 'F', the initial of King Fernando I, surmounted by a royal crown with trefoil finials. Two six-pointed rosettes flank the crowned initial in the field, one to the left and one to the right. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding circular legend reads FERNANDVS REX PORTVGALI, identifying the issuing monarch.

Reverse description Central cross composed of five heraldic escutcheons bearing the Portuguese quinas (five bezants arranged in a quincunx pattern), one shield at each arm of the cross and one at the center, forming the distinctive Portuguese royal arms.
