Obverse description An early 1825 locomotive with wagons is depicted in relief above a stone bridge, the spandrels of which bear heraldic shields flanking the dates 1825 and 1925. A modern 1925 steam locomotive passes beneath the bridge arch in the foreground. The legend RAILWAY CENTENARY arcs along the upper border.

Reverse description A forward-facing bust of George Stephenson in low relief is set within a circular frame inscribed with his name and the date 1825, surrounded by a laurel wreath. The maker's initials WJD and assay marks appear above the wreath at the top of the field. The outer legend records the presentation by L. Ropner, Mayor of Stockton-on-Tees, with the date 1925.
