The foreground depicts a Native American on a clifftop looking upon a bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) flying overhead. The words DAWN OF AMERICA appear around the top of the medal.

The landscape is superimposed by the arms of the State of Maine, under which is the word MAINE flanked by two eastern white pine (Pinus strobus) branches. The date 1820 is located to the bottom left of the mountain and the date 1970 is located on the bottom right. The words and design are surrounded by a circle of five-pointed stars.
