Obverse description
The obverse features a landscape of a lake and mountains with the sun half-way above the horizon. A Native American community occupies the lakeshore in the background. The foreground depicts a Native American on a clifftop looking upon a bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) flying overhead. The words DAWN OF AMERICA appear around the top of the medal.
The reverse features a mountain beside a lakeshore with rays emerging from behind, above which is the word SESQUICENTENNIAL. The landscape is superimposed by the arms of the State of Maine, under which is the word MAINE flanked by two eastern white pine (Pinus strobus) branches. The date 1820 is located to the bottom left of the mountain and the date 1970 is located on the bottom right. The words and design are surrounded by a circle of five-pointed stars.
