Obverse description Two American doughboys in high relief amid a devastated No Man's Land: one soldier in the foreground prone and aiming a rifle, while a second soldier crouches behind him in a wide-brimmed campaign hat. Shattered tree trunks and a shell explosion fill the background field. The entire design is encircled by a ring of barbed wire, with the engraver's initials ESD visible in the lower field.
